Man Says He Found Fried Mouse in Bag of Chips

Jack Hines stated that he was eating some Frito-Lay chips on Tuesday, when he came across a fried mouse. Frito-Lay Inc. says that it will investigate the man's claim, but the company's spokesman said Frito-Lay is "very skeptical" of the claim after the company was sent a picture of the rodent.

The spokesman, Jared Dougherty, says that most of the time if a "foreign object" enters a bagged product, it is after the product leaves Frito-Lays control. The company takes problems with their products very seriously, and plan to send a representative to collect the mouse and chips for testing this weekend.

Hines said he found maggots on the mouse and chips a day after eating the chips. He has not seen a doctor yet, and only plans to if he gets sick. Hines did not know if he would seek an attorney to handle the matter.

State health officials stated that they knew nothing of the incident and were not investigating it.

For more information on this subject, please refer to our section on Defective and Dangerous Products.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jenny Albano

Burger King Switching to Trans-Fat-Free Oil

Burger King, the world's second largest hamburger chain, announced Friday that it will be switching to trans-fat-free oil in all U.S. stored by the end of next year. Burger King stated that they have already been using the trans-fat oil in hundreds of their stores, but they want all restaurants to have the healthier alternative.

BK uses mostly cooking oil for french fries and the majority of its chicken products. The company tested the new trans-fat-free oil in their food and had customers taste test it. Consumers reported that more than a dozen of the items cooked in the new oil tasted the same or better than they had before.

Critics were saying that Burger King was taking to long to switch to healthier oils, and in response the Center for Science in the Public Interest sued Burger King in May. Burger King replied and said that they would begin infiltrating their zero trans-fat oil by the end of the year.

Other fast-food chains have done the same thing. McDonald's Corp. has begun to use the trans-fat-free oil this year and Wendy's International Corp. started using the same oil in August 2006. Starbucks announced that they would cut out trans fats in their foods and drinks in the U.S. and Canada by the end of this year and KFC and Taco Bell restaurants are not using trans fat in some of their foods.

Trans fats are listed on food labels as partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. They can raise bad cholesterol and lower healthy cholesterol, increasing the risk of heart disease, doctors say.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jenny Albano

Japan to Pass Maritime Law Regarding China

Japanese Congress is expected to approve an act later this month that is aimed at legalizing maritime rights in an attempt to contain China's oil and gas exploitation on the East China Sea near disputed areas, reports Phoenix television.

Accord to a report posted on the Phoenix website cites Japanese newspaper Sankei Shimbun, ruling Japanese Liberal Democratic Party will make a proposal to pas "Fundamental Laws of the Ocean," to which the Party, has expressed their consent.
A special commission in charge of Japan's oceanic activities is urging the government to concentrate the rights concerning Japan's thalassian interests from eight ministries and to allow for use of the unified power according to Sankei Shimbun.

The draft, outlined by a committee under the hard-line Minister of State for Defense Shigeru Ishiba, the LDP's proposes to establish an oceanic policy minister post and a collective oceanic office that will be led by the Prime Minister to plan resource exploitation and security of its marine belt.

According to the Sankei Shimbun, trying to minimize China's activities in the waters near the Japanese marginal sea is the major motivation behind the legislation.
China controls three million square kilometres of sea area, much smaller than Japan's area of 4.5 million square kilometres. Disputes over controversial water territory between the two countries are not anticipated to cease because of national pride and also the rich underwater resources that are becoming vital in today's world with its increasing energy needs.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Christina Cole
